What are you doing at 9am after tonight’s party?

Fotb Session Reminder

A quick reminder that the session I'm presenting tomorrow at FOTB has changed. My new session is called Grab the low-hanging fruit: or 5 rules for Hedonistic Creatives.

The session may have changed but, lest you worry, it's still taking place at the awesome time of 9am. So, once you've left tonight's party at Audio, head straight down to the Dome for some after-party fun!

Hoping to see at least three of you there tomorrow morning (and yes, that's you, Mom, Dad, and Stephanie!) :)

FOTB: Session change - Grab the Low-Hanging Fruit (or 5 Rules for Hedonistic Creatives)

A last minute change:

I'm going to be presenting my brand new session, Grab the Low-Hanging Fruit (or 5 Rules for Hedonistic Creatives) at Flash on the Beach next week.

The session got rave reviews at previews in Amsterdam and Belgium this week and I hope you guys will enjoy it too at FOTB in Brighton.

Here's the new description:

This session is for creatives — developers, designers, and artists — who make things, want to make things, haven't a clue where to start making things, or feel frustrated trying to make things and procrastinate. Aral Balkan has been there and done that. Come by for a humorous and inspirational talk from a creative who has made all the mistakes and enjoys making a conscious effort everyday to keep making new ones.

Learn the 5 Rules for Hedonistic Creatives: grab the low-hanging fruit, create, share, profit, and play! Create experiences that give joy and delight and start down your own path to becoming a happier creative.

Here's what preview audiences in Amsterdam and Belgium thought of this session:

"It put things in perspective again. Next thing I'll be making will be fun!" - Jankees van Woezik

"Experience the simple life of a developer and how easy it all should be." - Jonas De Smet

"Amazingly funny and inspiring talk . . . a life lesson" - Rob Slegtenhorst

"Was a blast, so inspiring!" - Cyril Hanquez

"Great and inspiring performance" - Bert Hagendoorn

"I had tears of laughter in my eyes . . . The session was not stuffed with revolutionary guidelines, but everyday things that people forget because they are afraid of sharing, of being different, of creating what they want, rather than what other people want them to create." - Sarah Deforche

"It was a real pleasure to see someone on stage really, and I mean _really_ caring about what they had to say. It’s not so common to hear voices nowadays without a clearly commercially or enterprise (yuck) driven agenda . . . Your session was insightful, inspiring, but most of all fun. Just like life should be." - Theun de Bruijn

See you all at FOTB!

Amsterdam and Ghent was so much fun!

I had an absolute blast previewing my new talk, Aim for the low-hanging fruit (or 5 rules for Hedonistic Developers), at the Adobe User Group events in Amsterdam and Ghent during the Adobe CS4 launch.

I always love presenting in both the Netherlands and Belgium -- you guys are so awesome -- and this time was no exception.

I don't know how it's possible, given that I've had just a total of 5 1/2 hours sleep in the last two nights and that I presented talks in two different countries yesterday -- but I'm feeling refreshed and recharged and raring to tackle the last month leading up to the conference.

Oh, and one small request:

If you attended either of the talks, I'd really love it if you could a comment and a short review. I'm trying to write up a summary for the talk and I keep getting stuck. How would you describe what you saw? Leave a note (or send me a 140 review on Twitter) and I'll use my favorites in the session description in the future (with full credit to you, of course, so make sure you leave your name). Thanks so much in advance!

SHOCK, HORROR as Aral changes session description for Multi-Mania (or: “Ruling the web: 12 things you must know as a Flash developer in the next 10 years.”)

OK, I couldn't help it. There's so much tabloid journalism going on in our industry these days that it's probably not long before we actually start seeing such titles. I'm waiting for: JEREMY KEITH IN ALIEN BABY CONSPIRACY!!! (all caps and three exclamation marks and all).

So what was I saying again? Oh yes, I've just sent an updated session description to Koen for my talk at Multi-Mania. Don't worry, the Google App Engine stuff is still in there (ooh, Google App Engine, yummm!) But there's more... :)

Here's the updated session info:

Ruling the web: 12 things you must know as a Flash developer in the next 10 years.

Flash has been evolving at a breakneck speed in the last decade but the rest of the web has not been sitting idly by either. Quite on the contrary, there is a revolution underway in how web developers are building applications for the World Wide Web that is redefining the limits of traditional web development and hurtling it on a glorious collision course with Flash. So much so that I predict that in the next ten years we will see a merging of these worlds. Are you ready for this brave new web?

Join Aral for a whirlwind tour of 12 things that you must know as a Flash developer if you want to understand, survive, participate in, and help shape the future of the web.

Topics covered include HTML, CSS, web standards, progressive enhancement, accessibility, HTTP, RESTful interfaces and beautiful URIs, APIs, Python (the new BASIC), scalability (entering the cloud), the rise of the commodity web and Google App Engine, and best practices for Flash and Flex development with The GAE SWF Project.

Warning: Expect a flying pig.

I'm psyched to hear that over 300 of you have already signed up to attend. Multi-Mania is always such a wonderful experience -- I can't wait -- it's going to be a blast!

Amsterdambound

It's almost midnight, I haven't yet packed for Amsterdam, and the taxi's booked for 6am tomorrow to take Stephanie and me to the airport. So why the heck am I blogging?

Don't forget to scribble in my session, Beyond the Buttons, into your schedule for Monday and come to the Influxis party on the first night at Heeren van Aemstel to watch our band, Phlash5, perform.

See you at FITC Amsterdam!

FITC mobile guide

Fitc Mobile Guide by Thomas Joos

Heading to Amsterdam for the FITC conference this weekend? Make sure you grab Thomas Joos's mobile conference guide on your FlashLite 2-enabled phone.

(Oh yeah, and Shawn emailed me at some point to let me know that Colin's going to be presenting a free day of ActionScript 3 training in Amsterdam on February 27th so if you want to get into AS3, make sure you sign up for that.)

My FITC Amsterdam session is titled Beyond the Buttons on the morning of the first day. My talk is not about the technology but about everything else that you can do with the wonderful tools that we have at our disposal. It's going to be an inspirational and interactive journey (so get ready to get involved).

Oh yeah, and our not-so-little-some-might-even-say-quite-large band, Phlash5, is going to give its second ever concert at the after party. Expect classic hits like Papervision (Girls they'd laugh and look away/They'd point and stare at my forms/I had a bitmap-and-vectorstantial existence/That was somewhat flat/You can't get laid like that...) :)
