I sometimes drift over to Slashdot to see what my fellow geeks are debating at the waterhole. Being a self-professed geek myself, you'd think I would find it a pleasurable gathering of high intellects and yet, for the most part, I keep finding myself disappointed at the myths and misinformation that Slashdotters appear to take great pride in perpetuating, especially when it comes to matters concerned with Flash and, quite possibly, anything that isn't Open Source.

I love Open Source. I also believe that I've contributed my share to Open Source, with the Ariaware RIA Platform, FLP Maker, FlashAnt, etc., and hope to continue to do so. However, this doesn't mean that I take every opportunity to badmouth closed-source applications. The mantra at Slashdot appears to be: Closed Source Sucks (CSS?.. Is this a conspiracy? :))

Me In Flash!

6 Jan 2005

I just checked out the MXDU web site (*blush* to get the dates for my diary) and saw that they have a very cool new look (apart from that long email address breaking out of the right column guys!) :)

In my professional opinion, it looks "gnarly!" (That's the first word that popped into my head and I can't, for the life of me, remember the last time I used it!)

How naïve it was of me to think that Flash wouldn't have an ace up its sleeve when I jubilantly announced my victory over printing a TextArea component's multi-page contents.

Truth be told, the weathered programmer, having gotten all the pages to scroll to their exact locations had thought the battle over. He had celebrated and there had been much merriment. Yet he was unaware that in Flash, What You See Is *Not* What You Print!

Episode V: PrintJob Strikes Back

3 Jan 2005

After much, much hair pulling and many sleepless nights, I've come up with a way to print a TextArea component's contents correctly when they span more than a single page (ok, I did sleep but dreamt about it, ok?) [Sad note: This is true.]

It's definitely not a trivial affair my any means and I hope to write an article (chapter? BOOK?!) about it when I get some time.
