New version of NaturalDocs released: Fixes bug with ActionScript

Greg Valure today released version 1.34 of NaturalDocs. It fixes a bug in the new ActionScript parser where not ending all of your statements with semicolons would cause it to skip content or, in certain circumstances, hang altogether. Download the latest version today!

WIF is back!

I'm bringing What is Flash? back from the dead and this time, it's going to stay undead! :)

The addition of ActionScript 2 support NaturalDocs and Daniel and Greg's immediate contributions prompted me to bring WIF back so it can become a central information house as well as a living and breathing collaboration space for the Flash community.

I've set up holding pages for both Daniel's NaturalGui and Greg's ac NaturalDocs Generator. Both are linked to from NaturalDocs for Flash -- which I hope will contain links to all NaturalDoc's related projects by the community.

I am also in the process of setting up a Subversion repository for NaturalGui (and if any other open-source projects would like one too, please contact me.)

The latest WIF

WIF 2005 rocks! WIF became the first WYSIWYG Wiki in the world when I released it on New Year's Day, 2003 and I still haven't seen anything that compares to it in terms of ease-of-use. And now, it's so much better still!

To combat spam, I integrated a CAPTCHA -- and guess what, it's Flash! Also, it now runs the latest version of HTMLArea with means us Firefoxers can now use the WYSIWYG editor. Full details are on the What Is Flash? site.

Flash, meet NaturalDocs… NaturalDocs, Flash!

I have some great news! This morning Greg Valure emailed me to let me know that NaturalDocs now has full language support for ActionScript 2! If you're itching to try it out, download NaturalDocs version 1.33 with ActionScript 2 support now.

I’ve pulled out of Flash Europe

I finally managed to talk to someone from FlashEurope today. I got a phone call from Harold, the organizer of the event, after someone gave him a link to my earlier post. That post was written after not being able to reach anyone at Flash Europe for over a month and after reading Peter Elst's post on the topic (and being contacted by Peter and Owen that they had not had any luck reaching anyone either).

FlashEurope mailing list

I just set up a mailing list on FlashAnt for speakers and attendees of FlashEurope. It would be great if we could at least get all speakers on (I would send out invites but I don't have *everyone's* email and have a huge day in front of me today!) After signing up could you please send a short email to the list to introduce yourself and whether you're an attendee or speaker and also whether or not you've been able to get in touch with the organizing committee at all. Thanks!

Update: 2005-02-07

I have removed this mailing list as I am no longer in any way associated with Flash Europe after having pulled out of speaking.

Can someone from FlashEurope please contact me?

I don't know what the deal is with Flash Europe but there appears at best to be some serious lack of organization going on.

See him, hear him, touch him?

I just saw that our good friends over at Friends of ED posted a news item on the ActionScript for Designers course that Sham Bhangal will be teaching for us at the end of February. Sham's a prolific author and was my personal hero after I read his excellent Flash MX Upgrade Essentials book back in the day. His latest books include Foundation Flash MX 2004 and Foundation ActionScript for Flash MX 2004 from Friends of ED and Flash Hacks from O'Reilly.

Sham's also going to be doing a talk at the February meeting of the London MMUG where he will take a classic MAME video game and recreate it Flash.

We did it!

Thanks to your votes and donations, work has already begun to bring ActionScript 2 support to NaturalDocs. I received the following email from Greg Valure this morning:

Well, now that your campaign is over you'll be happy to know it delivered. You didn't get the 240 votes you wanted, but you got me working on it. Since you happened to time it right before the weekend, I already have it partially working. I'm hoping to have it within a week, depending on how busy I'll be otherwise.

Over the course of the four-day campaign, the Flash and Flex community emailed in about 80 votes and and I'm also happy to report that I just sent in a $200 donation on behalf of Ariaware this morning, bringing the donation amount to $310.

This is great news for the Flash and Flex community as it means that we are finally getting our own, open-source, easy-to-use and (sexy-as-hell to boot) documentation tool. And the community has already begun to embrace and even contribute to NaturalDocs. Daniel Aguilar has just released the second beta of his NaturalGUI front-end in .Net (NaturalGui_beta2.zip, 9kb) and it appears that Richard Leggert is going to be working on a Java-based front-end for it.

In order to provide both users and developers a place to talk, I've set up a NaturalDocs mailing list on FlashAnt.

You should also subscribe to the official NaturalDocs announcements mailing list run by Greg Valure, to get the latest news straight from the source.

Thank-you again to everyone who voted and donated towards the goal. Thanks to you, and Greg's hard work, we're getting full language support for ActionScript 2 in NaturalDocs! :)

NaturalDocs for Flash Vote Campaign Deadline

I'm going to bring the NaturalDocs for Flash Vote Campaign to an official end at midnight on Sunday night. (Of course people are free to vote after that time, it just won't be as part of this campaign.)

Vote to bring NaturalDocs to Flash continues… have you voted?

As of this morning we have 20 votes for the campaign to get ActionScript support to be added to NaturalDocs.Although this is almost double the number of votes that C++ has and although we will be donating enough to put ActionScript 2 at the head of the list monetarily, it still may not be enough due to the perceived high "general importance" of the current top spot language, C++ (ie., it's accepted as fact that lots of people use it.) You and I know that lots of people use ActionScript too -- so if we can really open up the vote margin, this, coupled with our donation, should be enough to give ActionScript the decisive lead and guarantee that full language support for ActionScript is the next thing added to NaturalDocs.
