More pictures up from Flashtival & proof that Peter Hall is a computer!

Emilie has put up some pictures she took during Flashtival on the London MMUG web site and finally, it appears that we have proof that Peter Hall actually *is* a computer.

Peter Hall with AC plugged in. That sort of brain power must require some serious juice!

What is happening with Flash Europe?

Note: At the request of Harold, I have temporarily removed this post.

Harold has assured me that the Flash Europe organizers will be making a public announcement next week, after they have personally talked to all the speakers and attendees currently registered for the event and I, for one, am willing to support them in their efforts. Best of luck, guys, and I look forward to your announcement.

The wonderful blur that was Flashtival

Wow, what a day! (Or what a wonderful couple of days!)

Emilie and I have been in Holland since Saturday and we've been having the greatest time. Everyone on the Flashtival team has been so friendly and it was wonderful meeting such interesting (and might I add, multitalented) people! Special thanks to Elmer for inviting me and to Lizemijn and Koen for all their support. It was also great to see Peter (Elst) and Owen again and to meet Ola and Johanna (and their delightful little baby!) Now I just have to practice my Dutch names!

I really enjoyed Ola and Peter's sessions. It's always inspiring to see the range of uses Flash has (Ola's animations were truly a work of art and I am quite sure we will be hearing more of Peter's framework in the coming days.) I only wish I knew Dutch and could have attended some of the other sessions also but alas there were only so many hours in the day.

I was also very happy with my session (and I'm usually hard to please!) Tightening up the preview I gave at the London MMUG did wonders -- I took the presentation from roughly 35 slides to about 14 and created a new sample application (a pattern-based version of the AMFPHP Pizza Service application) and I believe that really helped the audience (and what a great audience it was) to compare the two approaches more easily.

It's about 10.30pm now and I'm looking forward to well deserved rest and we will be leaving Holland tomorrow with only the fondest memories. I can't wait for my return on the 25th of October to present at the Amsterdam MMUG and I'm equally looking forward to my session at the Belgium MMUG on October 23rd.

Flashtival: Peter Hall’s session

Peter's showing us his document-based Flash system (DDF) -- using a single HTML file that can either render as HTML or as Flash in the browser (yes, it's as cool as it sounds and I am sure that we will see some real community development around this once he's released the source. The thought going on in my head is, how hard would it be to wire this up so it parses Flex? (Ok, pretty hard, I'm sure -- and client-side Flex parsing proof-of-concepts have already been created -- the real advantage of Flex, of course is the server-side rendering and caching.)

The crux of Peter's new framework revolves around using a central document manager in Flash to map tags in the HTML (using XHTML) to text fields and movie clips in Flash.

Still sounds confusing? Here's an example:

Use my.html?ddfView=html to view the page in HTML and my.html to view it in Flash. All the processing is done client-side so a server-side component is not necessary.

Peter is nearing the end of his talk and here are the promised pictures:

Flashtival: Ola Bergner’s session

I'm sitting in Ola Bergner's session at Flashtival and watching some amazing animation being deconstructed. Ola's stuff is amazing. He uses shape tweens almost entirely to great effect.

Here are some pictures:

Ola and Owen right before the session.

One of the first animations Ola showed. Of a bumblebee and a flower. Beautiful!

Ola presenting.

The 13 minute animated movie we just watched. I wish I could add the music here too as it adds so much to it. The atmosphere and feeling of the piece is just wonderful.

I'll try and blog more from the event as I attend the other sessions.

Presenting at Flashtival in Rotterdam

I just got confirmed as a speaker for Flashtival in Rotterdam on the 27th of September. Looking forward to catching up with Owen, Waldo and Peter (and Peter!) and meeting the amazing Dutch talent at the event :)

London MMUG - New web site and last night’s meeting

The London MMUG has a new web site at a new address:
http://londonmmug.org

The new site is entirely composed of forums, underscoring our commitment to *community*.

We had a great meeting last night with over 60 people in attendance. Alias Cummins presented on collision detection techniques for Flash games and I presented a session on best practices methods for creating Flash applications.

MX Days date change

The MX Days conference in London has been moved to November 16th, 2004.

Since I will be in South Africa on the new date, aYo Binitie, Lead Engineer for Flash Communication Server at Ariaware will be presenting on my behalf.

IP to Country (and Currency) Test

Can you help me test a little script I'm writing to find a user's country (and the currency used there) based on their IP?

If you have a moment, click here to test the script and let me know if it got your country and currency right. (Sorry the page is such an eyesore, I don't have a UI yet.) Btw, you can either leave a comment here or email iptest AT flashant.org.

Thanks in advance! :)
