New screencast: Discover the easiest way to build data-driven Flash apps with SWX Beta 1.3!

This video requires Flash.

I released SWX Beta 1.3 today and recorded a new screencast to get you up and running with it.

The screencast covers installing and using the SWX MAMP Bundle but it applies equally if you're using your own development server.

The SWX MAMP Bundle contains everything you need to get up and running with SWX on a Mac (a full development server that contains Apache, PHP, MySQL, and, of course, SWX.)

If you already have a web server with PHP, you can download the much smaller zip file that just contains SWX and unzip it under your web folder and follow along with the screencast from there.

I hope you enjoy the screencast and the latest version of SWX. As always, your feedback is invaluable. Feel free to leave a comment here or join the SWX mailing list.

Download SWX Beta 1.3 from swxformat.org.

    Hi Aral,

I’m deeply impressed with this SWX format! It’s maybe strange but I’d never heard of it before! I just did some testing and it worked all out of the box! (Just the way i like it)

I’m defanatly going to use it in one of my next projects!

The only thing keeps me from using it is it’s only AS2… have you got any schedule for the AS3 version?

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    this is a good one.
Im using AMFPHP for a long time, i have my class too that simplifies the connection to them but this is so simple of use. Im consider installing on my personal computer.

but the best is the super easy to install the server, and i testing now, and it runs :)
    great job Aral

    Very nice Aral!

Any ideas how soon we can have this for other languages…ColdFusion maybe? Also, is there plans to have an AS3 version?

Can’t wait to try it out. Thanks!

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the kind words — I’m so chuffed that you like it :)

Regarding AS3: There *is* going to be an AS3 version but I don’t have a fixed timescale for that yet. My current focus is on getting SWX and the APIs (both the ActionScript API for SWX itself and the third-party APIs for Flickr, etc.) as solid as possible.

I’m also writing up a spec for the SWX data format that I will be publishing as an RFC as well as a certification document so that ports to other languages and platforms (Ruby, J2EE, .Net, etc.) will work the same way (the worst thing will be if each works differently to the other so we need some control there.)

I will be updating this blog and swxformat.org with more information as I have it.
