I run it without any sounds and mostly minimized as a tray icon. Like this it's not really distracting for me. I also chat here alot: http://www.lemon64.com/ (Chat only visible when registered in the Forum! It's like they're in the room with you but only when you want them to be :) It's not a distraction like IM (which I usually keep off because I can't get any work done otherwise.)
