Speakers typically speak at 120 words per minute. The audience can absorb 500 words per minute. Therefore, Alan needs to recognize the fact that people have about 400 words of free time, aka, spare cycles to multi-task and do other things.

...or you can do like I do and speak at moch-2.

Totally agree with you Aral, if I wanted to learn everything about a topic then I would buy a book or go to a workshop. Conferences are great for giving you an overview of current trends (for dConstruct it was Microformats), and really to inspire you into going home or back to work and to see really what you can do with these trends (like writing some software... ). All of the social events and backnetworking at dConstruct also made it a much better experience - its nice to get out of the office for a day or two, meet new people, and have some fun.

Also, spot on with your comments on Keynote - this weekend I've been preparing some training materials for Mon/Tues, and I decided to forget Powerpoint and go for Keynote for all of the slides etc. Nice and flexible application once you get used it it, plus my slides are definately looking prettier ;)
