Ever since we moved servers, I've been flooded with bounce notifications from the various OSFlash mailing lists with the following error:
SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection:
host e.mx.mail.yahoo.com [216.39.53.1]: 421 4.7.0 [TS01] Messages from 72.34.61.10 temporarily deferred due to user complaints - 4.16.55.1; see http://postmaster.yahoo.com/421-ts01.html:
retry timeout exceeded
On the linked page it reads:
This error message indicates we are seeing unusual traffic from your IP address and/or that emails from your mail server are generating complaints from Yahoo! Mail users. Please note that this is a temporary error, and we encourage you to retry sending emails to our servers approximately 4 hours after you encounter this particular error.
If you are seeing this error consistently over a 48-hour period, we encourage you to provide us with detailed information, including the complete error message you see in your logs, by filling out this form. (Note: Please make sure to select “Getting deferrals due to user complaints” in the form’s dropdown menu.)
So I filled out the form a few days ago and got this canned email back:
Hello,

Two days later, I received:
Hello,
Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Mail.
Please note that if you are not the administrator of the mail server in
question, kindly contact your email administrator directly with the
error message you are receiving. If you are seeing a 421 error code in your SMTP logs indicating that the
messages you are trying to send are "temporarily deferred due to user
complaints," this means that we have observed unusual traffic patterns
from your IP address and have been getting considerable complaints from
our users regarding emails from your server. Please note that this is not a permanent error; your system may
automatically re-try after a while. We encourage you to try re-sending
to our emails approximately 4 hours after you encounter this error. If,
however, you are seeing this same error consistently over a 48-hour
period, we encourage you to provide us with more information so that we
can help diagnose your problem. For bulk mail senders, please visit the URL below to review our best

I've just forwarded this email to my web host and I hope they'll be contacting Yahoo! shortly with the information they require.
In the meanwhile, however, I've started receiving floods of email from Mailman informing me that people with Yahoo email addresses are being removed from various OSFlash mailing lists due to "excessive bounces".
I do apologize if you're affected by this. Please try signing up with a non-Yahoo email address until we get to the bottom of this.
If anyone has any suggestions, etc., please do let me know as I don't grok this stuff at all.

Yahoo,Hotmail and Gmail blocking all types of mailing lists !! just try to change your server IP
and they loves groups :)
Yahoo does have this problem and you’re not the first one to see it. I also have to send out mailers and even though I send them once in a month or so, everytime my mail queue gets choked. And no matter what data you send them, there’s no relief coming your way.
What I do is (and what you can do is), to let the mail queue retry the message sending over and over again. I’ve read that this is the only way because there’s no more explanation from Yahoo over this except the error message you already have seen. And the mail queue does get cleared gradually on its own.
It’s possible that your IP address is blacklisted with Yahoo! (and maybe others) due to behaviour by the previous owners of that address. Maybe your ISP can assign you a new/additional IP to use with your server.
Aral, shoot me email offline and I’ll try to get you in touch with someone in the antispam team here at Yahoo!.
I had this problem with a client’s server last month. It took them 5 weeks to clear the block and whitelist them. We only had problems when doing large mailings (300,000+). no problem with small (<10,000) mailings.
Hi Ryan, I’ll do so. I also mentioned it to Chris during Highland Fling. I’ll shoot both of you an email ASAP.
Everyone else: Thanks for your support and tips. I’m going to see if we can’t change the IP.
Hi everyone! I’m writing from the help desk of an ISP in Michigan and we’ve been blocked by Yahoo for more than 2 weeks now. I’ve seen those exact same messages above quite a few times lately! I was starting to get very mad at Samuel until I realized it was an auto-responder ;)
I have a case number of: 46796660
Ryan, any chance you think you can send a message to your contact on my behalf? It’s driving us nuts having to hear all these people whine about not being able to send to friends and family at Yahoo. We’ve tried changing IP addresses and they seem to have our entire class c blocked.
HI
Ryan I am also having problems with yahoo blocking my emails …
Case number 65242717
Can you help with this?
Thanks
