Adobe Updater, Die Die Die!
My daily Adobe Updater experience: Launch Photoshop. Cringe as I see the freakin' Adobe Updater icon jumping in the dock like a crazed puppy dog. Switch over to it. See the completely unhelpful dialog above (Which file? Where should I place it? Why should I care? Leave me alone!). Force quit Adobe Updater.

On the train, I’m offline. But the bloody Adobe Updater just keeps on “connecting”. How hard is it to ask the OS if there’s an internet connection? Even my fraggin iScrobbler menu bar item is aware of my online status within seconds of it changing!

What is it with update software?
Microsoft pissed everyone off with their use of Windows Update to force the awful Vista-style search on XP users.
Apple install their updater application on Windows users even if you tell it not to, and then force software on you, that you haven’t yet installed, as updates.
And now Adobe wade into the fray with an attempt to win the “most meaningless dialog of the year award” with their updater.
Updates ought to be a painless process that keep your machine protected from the malware-pushing scum. Why can’t big companies see this!

On windows you get a nice little balloon that says “Adobe updater needs your attention!”
Maybe if they included some kind of tamagotchi style interface where you have to feed it and keep it clean in order to get your updates.

I’m glad to see it’s not just me. It doesn’t help that the only time I open an adobe application is when I actually need to do work and don’t have the time or patience to deal with it. I’ve been getting that same error and asked myself the same question.. “You’re the updater, you should know better what to do with your file than me!”

Yes, the updater is annoying. Also you aren’t allowed to have the browser running either. Let’s hope they will change it !

They even have a song about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBkKBeVX9js

Aral, I feel for you I really do.
Might I suggest, when you have a spare couple of hours having a look at AppFresh:
http://metaquark.de/appfresh/
Great little app for keeping everything up to date, it integrates really nicely with iusethis.com allowing you to take a snapshot of all your apps, so that *touch wood* you machine ever dies you know what to re-install.
My point being, if everything’s up to date…you shouldn’t get the annoying bouncing puppy of doom every day.
HTH.

I turned the updater off a LONG time ago. What a pain in the arse bit of software. Most of the time it would just end in error anyways.

I second Graeme. Adobe has posted instructions here on turning it off.

ABSOFUCKINLUTELY! I did the “update” and installed the “latest version” of the adobe reader onto an external hd (my fuck up?!) and now any files that were on there but not in a folder are GONE! WTF! Did adobe convert the files? Erase them? Send them to cyber hell? WTF!!! There were things that I had been working on for MONTHS in there! I hate to just dump the damn program and take a chance of never recovering my files, but I most definitely want it OFF of my PC. Any suggestions anyone? HELP ME GET ADOBE READER 9 OFF MY FUCKING COMPUTER PLEASE!!
